Changes to Description treatment in Brandkit

We've recently pushed a small change (in Brandkit) to Descriptions in Asset Metadata.

In Brandkit the Short Description* field (limited to 256 characters) is also used for the Meta Description used by search engines (and SEO) when indexing any page. Combined with the Meta Title* (which comes from Asset Title) these provide search engines (such as Google) a way to describe the page that they are pointing to in search results.

From today we're making this a little more obvious by changing where this text appears in the (1) Asset Preview Modal, (2) Asset Detail Page and (3) Download forms. Generally the Short Description will now appear immediately underneath the Asset Title.

If there is no Description entered, nothing will be shown.

Other Uses
This change was partly driven by a client who wanted to display approved copy to be used when ever an image was posted to social media. This is the perfect place for this data, because it is presented whenever a user views the Asset, and secondly because that same approved copy is used in Meta Description for SEO.

Impact
Short Description has been important for SEO for some time but many clients don't enter a short description. Many of you aren't concerned about SEO for your Brandkit asset pages.

If no Short Description is entered then instead we automatically write into the meta description text made up of "Asset Title + Asset Tags".

Accounts with Login Walls
Note, that if you have a login wall, search engines are blocked from indexing, and sharing asset page links on social media (e.g. Facebook) because they cannot index the page.

 

Notes:

  1. Asset Title (which is used for Meta Title) is either the original uploaded Filename or Caption (if Caption is entered).
  2. The Short Description or Description field does not support HTML. So use plain text with no special characters. Max 256 characters (but try and stay under 160).
  3. The Long Description or Extended Description field supports longer texts and also supports basic HTML formatting.
  4. For SEO Meta descriptions (i.e. short description) can be any length, but search engines generally truncate snippets longer than 160 characters. It is best to keep meta descriptions long enough that they're sufficiently descriptive, but shorter than that 160-character limit.
  5. Accounts with customised layouts, may not see any change.
